Bike Shed

Design Bernt Fröderberg

The modular design of this bike shed makes it possible to create a unique building. Sections can be aligned in a row to create a long narrow shelter, or positioned in ‘L’ or ‘U’ shapes to make efficient use of the space they occupy. The roof height is customisable, enabling the shelter to be lower, if necessary. Trellises attached to the sides form supports for creeping vines, making an attractive addition to green areas or providing the potential for plant life in an urban setting.

Materials and surface treatments

The posts and trellises are made in steel. The top plates for the posts are made from steel plate. All steel pieces are sand-blasted, zinc-electroplated, gold-chromed and powder-coated in standard colours black RAL 9005 or anthracite Gris 2900 Sable. The roof is made from plywood and lined with a layer of waterproof roofing material. Standard colour light grey NCS 3005-Y50R.

Steel

Nola uses high-quality steel with good strength in our products. Steel rusts if left untreated and must therefore be surface treated. This is done through electro-galvanization and powder coating, hot-dip galvanizing, or application of a zinc powder primer.

Pine

Nola's pine is of high quality and comes from sustainable forestry. Pine is an environmentally friendly, domestically produced material. Damaged or untreated pine is quite easily attacked by decomposition processes; therefore, it is particularly important to repair damaged surfaces.

Electrogalvanized

Electrogalvanizing (also known as zinc plating) provides corrosion protection through the sacrifice of zinc ions. It is created via a zinc coating on the steel using an electric current.

Powder coating

Powder coating is a coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint, powder coating is usually applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light. The result is an even, hard-wearing coloured surface with the desired gloss level.

Water-based glaze

Varnishing of wood is done with a water-based varnish. A water-based paint that is kinder to the environment. Under normal use, the paint has a good wear resistance and long durability.

Assembly and placement

In-ground

Cast in ground.

Assembly required. The posts and trellises should be screwed together on site. The wooden pieces are pre-sawn for easy assembly.

The posts are extended by 49.5 cm for casting in concrete or securing in a base made for small-sizes street lamps. Alternatively, they can be prepared for mounting to a base plate on the surface of the ground.

Maintenance

Water-based glazed pine

Products in varnished pine must be maintained regularly with alkyd paint. Maintenance intervals approximately 1 time per year. Damage and cracks should be repaired immediately. Touch-up paints in spray packaging are available in standard colors to order.

Powdercoated steel

Products that are electro-galvanized and powder-coated can be touch-up painted with alkyd paint.
