Kalmar

Planter

Design Fredrik von Platen

The Kalmar planter gives the traditional terracotta planter a contemporary update. Kalmar is crafted in reinforced concrete. As it scales up to large proportions it retains the elegant contours characteristic of terracotta pots. The planter is fitted with an adjustable base that enables it sit level and an irrigation tank that keeps the soil moist. A detachable inner container makes it easy to remove the plants in winter while leaving the planter in place year-round.

Materials and surface treatments

The planter is made in reinforced cast concrete.
The inner container is made in reinforced fibreglass with galvanised steel handles.
The irrigation tank is made in plastic.

Concrete

Concrete is cement mixed with crushed stone or aggregate. The material is very strong in compression but fragile in tension. To compensate for this concrete can be reinforced, often with steel.

Coloured concrete

Colored concrete is concrete in a color other than standard grey. Pigment is added to the dry mixture, which means that the concrete becomes coloured throughout. Each color has its own recipe.

Assembly and placement

Freestanding

Freestanding product that is placed directly on the ground.

Fully assembled.

The adjustable base can be attached to the surface with bolts. Bolts are not included.

Maintenance

Concrete

Both normal concrete and fibre-reinforced concrete are sensitive to hard edge impacts. A concrete product that has been damaged can be repaired with polyester filler, such as the product “Plastic Padding”.

Coloured concrete

Products made of coloured concrete are washed with a pressure sprayer at low pressure. Damaged products can be repaired with a repair kit that is available to order.
