Viaduct Awarded Swedish Design S Award

2023–06–04

Nola is pleased to announce that the Viaduct bench, designed for Nola by Anki Gneib, received an annual Swedish Design S Award in the furniture category. The 2023 awards ceremony was held on 31 May in the Swedish city of Umeå.

Crafted from standard-sized lengths of CLT, a material made from recycled construction waste, the Viaduct bench was cited as a leading example of resource conservation and design innovation. As a result, the bench’s classic style and hard-wearing materials guarantee that it will have many years of use.

A statement released by the Swedish Design S Award jury notes the following:  “How can new products be created from reclaimed waste? Anki Gneib's simple, yet sophisticated, bench made from cross-laminated timber (CLT) recycled construction waste shows how. The design language recalls the profiles of ancient viaducts, an iconic shape that Gneib ‘upcycled’ to create a hard-wearing modular bench able to withstand heavy use in indoor and outdoor environments.”

Eclectic and appealing in equal measures, the Lobster armchair won the prestigious Ung Svensk Form (Young Swedish Design) award in 2019. Since then, the concepts underpinning it have continued to evolve, inspiring designer Martin Thübeck to arrive at the version that is now part of Nola’s indoor furniture range.
