The memorial grove at Alstadhaug Cemetery in Norway received the first prize for best memorial grove in 2019. The award was presented by the Norwegian Association for Cemetery Culture. Nola’s contributions to the project included the Memory memorial marker designed by Løventanna Landskap, and Kalmar backed benches designed by Lars Gunnars.
Named ‘Memory’, the memorial marker is comprised of 96 individual name plaques that give the setting a more personal atmosphere. The bottom part provides a low plinth for flowers and candles. The series also includes holders for watering cans and garden tools, designed in the same style as the memorial market itself. The style of the marker and accompanying garden accessories are shared throughout the site, but the individual memorial markers are adapted for each individual area. Each of the Kalmar backed benches were given the same surface treatment and colour palette as the memorial markers, creating a congruent colour theme throughout the site.
Løventanna Landskap, the designers behind Memory, based the design on the old tradition of engraving names onto metal plaques. They updated traditional plaques with laser-cut patterns that enable light to pass through. Although the design is decorative, Memory is made in a subtle style that shows respect for solemn surroundings.
