Mälardalen University

Projected by: Eskilstuna Municipality
Designers: Thomas Bernstrand, Broberg & Ridderstråle och Nola
Completed: 2022

Mälardalen University was recently redeveloped into a lively and welcoming learning centre. Today, students, residents and visitors can relax and socialise in addition to studying, and the campus is open during the evening as well as during the day.

The vision for the redevelopment aimed to make the school's entrance points more prominent and strengthen the connections between Eskilstuna centre and the nearby Munktellstaden district. The parts of the site developed off-campus were created in dialogue with students and local residents,  giving them the opportunity to express their preferences for the site’s functions and amenities. As a result, a safe and accessible environment was developed with outdoor amenities, such as riverside seating, green areas, secure parking for bicycles and open event spaces for a variety of activities.

“Now that the area surrounding the campus provides comfortable meeting places for everyone in Eskilstuna, it offers even more benefits to the students and university employees. The redevelopment creates a sense of belonging within the wider community, which is now an important part of everyday life here,” says Paul Pettersson, president of Mälardalen University.

Crafted in a sweeping shape that balances atop a streamlined frame, the Kajen sun lounger is made with maximum comfort in mind.

Under the Terrass pergola the students can eat their lunch next to the creek.

Bill Post's height and distinctive shape draws attention to the notices attached to it, and can provide a meeting point in public areas.
